Mind Mapping - The new way of BrainStorming Ideas

Last weekend, I went to Langkawi for holiday. As normal, I am taking AirAsia and with their standard delay schedule, I been hold for extra 1.5 hours. You got nothing to do in this Really LOW COST carrier terminal except doing the cheap thing what all the Malaysian did, Browse books for FREE.

I came into this book The Mind Map Book by Tony Buzan. I was looking for this book quite sometimes since I read an article about him on helping the US Governemnt to find the surviver in 911 incident. He is the creator of Mind Mapping.

What is Mind Mapping?

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. It is used to generate, visualize, structure and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, and decision making.

I am fully agreed that mind mapping helps in generating ideas. Once you start off with one keyword, immediately your mind will create the second related keyword. Eventually, your idea will grow into a huge map and can’t even fit into your paper. This is very hard to achieve if we use normal linear way to brainstorm ideas.

Here is some foundation structures for Mind Mapping (by Tony):

  • Start in the center with an image of the topic, using at least 3 colors.
  • Use images, symbols, codes, and dimensions throughout your Mind Map.
  • Select key words and print using upper or lower case letters.
  • Each word/image must be alone and sitting on its own line.
  • The lines must be connected, starting from the central image. The central lines are thicker, organic and flowing, becoming thinner as they radiate out from the centre.
  • Make the lines the same length as the word/image.
  • Use colors – your own code – throughout the Mind Map.
  • Develop your own personal style of Mind Mapping.
  • Use emphasis and show associations in your Mind Map.
  • Keep the Mind Map clear by using radial hierarchy, numerical order or outlines to embrace your branches.

I am regret of not knowing this skill during my college time. It helps to take down notes is a efficient way and not damaging my brain. My memory is getting worse and worse because there is some many things to keep in mind.

In the next post, I am going to write about "How to use Mind Mapping?" Let me use mind mapping to construct my post first.
